movmnt was a proud sponsor and friend of Dancers Responding to AIDS (DRA), and supported its Fire Island Dance Festival and Dance from the Heart benefits with ads designed for the cause.
DRA was founded in 1991 by Denise Roberts Hurlin and Hernando Cortez, then dancers with the Paul Taylor Dance Company, as they watched friends and fellow dancers fall ill. It is a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, the nonprofit that draws on the talents and generosity of the American theatre and dance communities to fund services for people with HIV/AIDS and other critical illnesses across the United States.
In July 1995, with a few dancers and a makeshift dance floor laid out on a pool deck in Fire Island Pines, DRA presented the first Fire Island Dance Festival and raised about $8,000. The festival has become an annual summer tradition on the shores of the Great South Bay, and by 2025, its 30th anniversary year, it had raised nearly $9.2 million.
